I asked this interview question a lot in my most recent round of hiring, but never got a realistic answer: "what does your ideal workday look like?" Here's my answer:

8 AM - 9 AM Catch up on news and information that will assist me in my days work

9 AM - 11 AM - Pick up a sick kid in their favorite car and drive them wherever they want to go

11 AM - 12 PM Work on long term art and masonry projects

12 PM - 1 PM Lunch, obviously

1 PM - 3 PM Planning and executing harsh punishments for animal and child abusers

3 PM - 5 PM Help a massive foundation spend it's money to make the world a better place

People never seemed to understand that I'm actually asking the question seriously. Even if you aren't telling the truth, at least make it sound honest. Honesty is just about the best attribute you can find in an employee. "Being detail oriented" can't possibly part of everyone's ideal workday, can it?

That tells me SO MUCH MORE about you than "I like to take on challenging problems and delivering consistent results."

7-8am: check email that came in after I left/before I got into work.

8-9am: walk out to shop, bullshit with shop managers and mechanics to find out if they have any issues that I can help with.

9-11am: call customers and suppliers for status updates.

11-noon: lunch/read car blogs

Noon-4pm: address issues from suppliers, customers, shop, and design team. Review design team's data. (In no particular order)

4pm and after: finish whatever paperwork, remaining issues, etc. required for deliverables.

Cold beer/glass of wine/tequila neat

Until you have an idea of what this looks like, it's just dumb luck if you can manage to find the right job for you.

Sounds like you have it figured out.

That's more or less my job right now.

Actually, this is what I expect from every engineer I work with.
